she's green is a band based in minneapolis, minnesota, formed in 2022. currently, it consists of zofia smith (vocalist), liam armstrong (guitarist), raines lucas (guitarist), teddy nordvold (bassist), and kevin seebeck (drummer).

their sound is super atmospheric and dreamy. i'd say they're a little reminiscent of 90's dream pop and shoegaze bands too - cocteau twins, my bloody valentine, and slowdive in particular. (ᵔ ⤙ ᵔ ๑)

The name she’s green traces back to something elemental. “It isn’t a crazy story – we were just throwing out names, and nature is something we all relate to”, Smith says. Long before they were a band, they were friends taking hikes, spending hours outside, orbiting the quiet landscapes that would later shape their sound.

Over time, the name rooted itself more deeply. “As time has gone on, there’s just been attached more and more meaning to the name”, Smith explains. What started as instinct began to feel intentional. “It feels like it’s this expression of the matriarchal energy of nature”, Armstrong adds.

how cute is that? i love how nature is a motif for this band.

i discovered them back in 2023 when their single, smile again, was included in my 'discover weekly' playlist. admittedly, i wasn't that interested at first. this is gonna sound harsh, but initially, i just thought they were another modern shoegaze band that were derivative of bigger names in the scene. despite my first impressions, i found myself coming back to the song again and again, so i decided to explore their discography further. thank fuck i did. they only had 3 singles and a demo out at the time, but trust and believe i played the hell out of them... to put it as simply as possible, i love this band with my entire being! their music's been a source of comfort for years now, and i'm positive it'll continue to be for many more.

as of writing this, 24/03/26, their debut album is yet to be released. i'm so excited to hear it and see how they experiment with their sound. i think that's why i love she's green so much in general - they don't limit themselves. hearing how they experiment with genre conventions is fun, especially when it's innovative! LUNA: Did you guys want to mention anything I didn’t bring up already?

NORDVOLD: I want to make it clear that we don’t hate shoegaze and we don’t hate the shoegazers [laughs]. We got a lot of love for them and we got a lot of love for the genre.

LUCAS: “Shoegaze band she’s green denounces shoegaze.”

LUNA: That’ll be the headline when this goes live.

NORDVOLD: They’re gonna tear us apart on Reddit.

SMITH: I love the genre. We just don’t wanna be in a box.

NORDVOLD: There’s definitely going to be music in the future which is very different than a lot of what’s come out so far, which I’m excited for.

in my opinion, wisteria is their current magnum opus. it was their debut EP! i’m biased, of course - it’s my favourite release. the cover is perfect to me because it literally embodies how i felt when i first listened to it. i was very excited, okay...

“I hope we’re giving people trance-like experiences and making them feel present,” Armstrong concludes. “I hope we’re offering them material they can relate to and be vulnerable with, all while helping them feel hopeful.”

out of the five tracks, mirrors and mandy are my favourites by a longshot. i come back to them constantly. mirrors is quite melancholic compared to the others and, i don’t know, it just gets to me! the live performances i’ve seen of it online - and the entire EP in general - are beautiful. zofia smith's vocals are so soothing and the instrumentals are gorgeous. it’s the kind of song i’ve come to associate with many memories and people in my life, so it has a heavy sentimental value to me.

“I love zoomed-in photos of moss – the microcosm of the forest floor, and the hidden worlds there. I thought, let’s try to evoke those hidden worlds in our music”, Armstrong explains. Those delicate textures and intricate details surface in their hazy blend of shoegaze, indie rock, and dream pop. “Another case of attaching meaning to something after the fact”, Nordvold laughs.
